NYC Kitchen Renovation

This traditional one bedroom co-op apartment was brimming with potential. A major kitchen overhaul anchored the project. The scope included demolition of an existing galley style kitchen, removal of walls and a lowered ceiling to make way for a spacious new kitchen layout with ample storage. Major upgrades included a new pantry closet, dishwasher and stack-able washer and dryer.  Other aspects included a bathroom renovation, updated electrical, recessed lighting and fixtures throughout, new upholstery and custom furniture.

The circulation of the hallway felt jarring, cramped and clutered.

The first thing you see as you enter the apartment is the new galley style kitchen.  Notice the built-in TV which frees up precious counter space. The clients are pleased with their new BLUESTAR 30" Gas Range Stove, MIELE 18" Dishwasher and 24" ventless Washer and Dryer, and LIEBHERR 30" Refrigerator.

Notice the soffit that used to float above the corner bookshelf. We incorporated that into the new layout to make it less conspicuous. The coat closet you see has been reallocated closer to the main entry door.

The clients enjoy watching television while cooking but there old TV took up precious counter space.  Every surface was covered with kitchen utensils, jars, spices, glasses pots and pans.  Notice how the kitchen was enclosed by a lowered ceiling and a partition wall to create a separate entry hallway space.

The tile was replaced with wood flooring to match the existing oak floors.  The kitchen and entry hallway that were once two smaller areas have been consolidated into a single integrated space.

This rendering illustrates the expansiveness of the new kitchen cabinetry.  The sage green base cabinets define the kitchen and add contrast and personality. Glass cabinet doors and an open shelf for cookbooks also add character and a focal point that is visible from the living room. The counter is versatile and can be used as a buffet during the holidays.

During the initial design phase of the project, this rendering really helped the clients understand how the space could be utilized. The cabinet system is flanked with a new stack able washer/dryer on the left and a pantry cabinet on the far right. There are several drawers, a dishwasher and  ample cabinetry.  The upper most cabinets can be used for seasonal storage, luggage and anything you can think of. This is particularly helpful in a small apartment that has limited store space.
